There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--you smile at the spell it puts you into and are refreshed, and not a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call movie magic and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing as it reawakens the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter s shorts (namely Knickknack and Tin Toy, which can be found on the Pixar video Tiny Toy Stories) illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humour--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney. Lasseter s story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they re not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy s favourite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he s the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar For the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film. In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

toy story 1995 - I absolutely love toy story 1 as much as toy story 2. this movie after a while has grown on me a lot and i watch this a lot now because at first i didnt like it. this is as great as the second one and my favorite character in both movies is rex the dinosaur. the best part of the movie is in the end where the family is moving and the toys are in the moving truck and woody and buzz are on the chase. the opening theme song you ve got a friend in me by randy newman is one of my favorite tracks. this movie is as great as toy story 2, monsters inc, and ice age. get all four of these great movies.

A Classic, Gold Dust, A Gem - I often wonder why I buy DVD s - after all I could hire them because I hardly ever watch them more than once. But not so Toy Story.I have kids, but they just give the excuse to watch this film. It s just such a good story - forget the ground breaking animation (which you will enjoy too), just get lost in the narrative - great story, great casting. No its not deep meaningful or complex, but there is just something brilliant about it - made by people who love film.

The very first feature computer anim, and still the best! - Toy Story is definitely a film that a kid should watch before they are a teen. Its adventure and great sense of humour is appealing to adult audiences as well, and the atmosphere is brilliant. This really is a Toy Story. The plot is indeed quite simple, and it would have to be for a classic family. Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks)is a toy sheriff doll, owned by a young boy called Andy. Woodys Toy life couldn t as Andy loves him a lot, but as Andy s birthday party arises tension fills the bedroom with each toy living in fear of being replaced. Everything goes well till the last birthday present is opened.. enter Buzz Lightyear!I would be criminal to tell you the rest of the story, but as far as humour and adventure are concerned, this film impresses in both categories. The toys different personalities really contrast and make you laugh, from the smart-chat of Mr. Potatoe head, to Slinky who is Woodys best toy friend. Its so easy to follow this film - the plot and characters are easy to watch the computer graphics are top notch. Compared to modern day CGI kids films, this stands out purely because of its innocence - a simple story, theirs no techno-babble, and its really fun. It was the first complete animation via computer, and still the best!

C mon, they re not lying down on the job... - Do not be fooled by the meagre 4 stars given to this film. It is a stroke of pure genius and is certainly not just for the kids. Each time you watch it you see something that you haven t before and it s this depth and amazing attention to detail which makes this film unsurpassable. The characters have been cast to perfection and after watching this, you ll never look at any Tom Hanks character the same way again. The story is anything but simple and with such an array of great characters, it s impossible to not identify with at least one. This film is not only worth a watch but also worth a buy as you will never ever get tired of watching it.

A stroke of genius - I have to say this film will be hard to beat. A beautifully animated film aIl bout toys which come to life in the absence of humans.....genius if you ask me. A must for adults and i suppose a few hours entertainment for kids seeing it is a cartoon and toys are in it. i gave it 5 stars coz i couldnt give it more so this is the least it deserved. If you havent watched it........guess what...watch it now
